The Mercy
Health System Physician Hospital Organization (PHO) is a not-for-profit,
taxable membership corporation that was established December
18, 1996. The PHO is designed to facilitate managed care contracting
relationships for Mercy Health Partners and nearly 600 physician
participants with the purpose of providing a full range of
medical and hospital services to persons enrolled in health
care benefit plans sponsored by third-party payors, self-funded
employers and others. The combined strength of MHS-PHO, coupled
with the mass of individual expertise available, presents
a powerful presence in the community.
A board
of trustees, which consists of nine Class A participants (physician)
and five class B members (hospital) manage the corporation.
St. Charles Mercy Hospital, St. Anne Mercy Hospital, Mercy
Healthcare Center, Mercy Children's Hospital and St. Vincent
Mercy Medical Center comprise the PHO's hospital panel.
Class
A physicians are nominated by their peers and elected to the
board by the Class B members. Of the nine Class A physician
trustees, currently there is one Primary Care Physician and
one Specialist Physician principally affiliated with each
PHO Member Hospital. There are five primary care and four
other specialists on the PHO Board. The Board votes as separate
classes based on their respective Class (A or B), thus with
the exception of certain reserve powers, any action of the
board requires a majority vote of each Class A and Class B
for the motion to carry.
Since
its inception in late 1996, 26 contracts, covering over 500,000
lives, have been secured for your participation.
